  1. Hypertext                 The term "hypertext" was coined in the mid-1960's by COMPUTER scientist Ted Nelson.  The original idea of hypertexting came from Vannevar Bush, President Roosevelt's wartime science advisor. He proposed a machine called the "Memex" in an Atlantic Monthly
  2. magazine article in July, 1945 titled "As We May Think".
  3.
  4. The strict theoretical vision of hypertext proposes that every piece of text, every word, be treated as a linkable element of an information system.  Huge amounts of data can be accessed and linked
  5. with a few key words or data associations.
  6.
  7. Hypertext SOFTWARE today supports not only links between text, but also between graphical, video, audio, and most importantly, executable program files in a hypertext environment to provide a robust multi-media database.

  9.
  10. We know it does a lot more than that. Must be an old dictionary. Aside from doing all of the above it runs all kinds of fun PROGRAMS from games to Data Base managers to Word processors to spreadsheets and sheduling programs and much more.
  11.
  12. 129.
  130. In response to the growing awareness of physical excercise as a way to health and well eing, many clubs have been established. They all offer some PROGRAMS and many a different MACHINE that get you involved in excecise to achieve health and well being and a longer healthier life.

  140. This word was mentioned in a BOOK review about MANAGEMENT and it's crazy bosses.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             21 Windows                   Sure, Windows is great, as you've probably found out. But the real point of windows, after all is not the COMPUTER operating environment itself but the SOFTWARE that runs on it. With this in mind and because it's difficult at times to find exactly what you want, particularily SOFTWARE like this, I've written a number of PROGRAMS. The one you're using here is just one of them.
  141.
  142. But, I've thought that, because it's so useful for so many things, that I would offer it to you. I'm not asking very much for it, just $25,00. It's a steal. You'll get much more value out of it than it's price.
  143.
  144. So fill out the Order form under the Help Menu and either call me, fax it to me or mail it to me. I accept Visa, Master Card, Money Order, Checks and Cash.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  22 Image                     In today's market, many stores are concentrating far too much on developing a long term image. That's important, but you can't concentrate on long term image at the expense of building sales. Advertising must generate short term sales by emphasizing price in the message. MANAGEMENT must know that consumers are much more price sensitive these days. They are looking for quality but they are also going to insist on the best price available.
  145.
  146. What is the role of the company name in the branding equation? POSITIONING, the problem with image building efforts, unlike price promotions, have little visible impact on sales in the short term. Branding of a company name is pivotal in owning the market. It's the only way of owning the market.
  147.
  148. The brand is identified by the name, and often by a symbol and a slogan as well.
  149.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      23 Positioning               It is never the less extremely important to build IMAGE, differentiation. That's all that will be left at the end of the year. Discounters build no loyalty as it is difficult to distinguish between one and the other because of a lack of differentiation.
  150.
  151. Sears had an extremely strong position. Everybody's favorite store. The stood for trust, value, integrity and quality. And they were believed to deliver these everywhere in America. They did not have to compete on price.
  152.
  153. This is the kind of position you can't buy. It takes years to earn. Then Sears MANAGEMENT decided to come out with an advertised policy of "Everyday low pricing". Sears cheapened it's image with these PROGRAMS by lowering itself to compete with discounters like Walmart and Target and others.  It had given away what others didn't have and took on something others had too. If you compete on price you'll die on price.
  154.
  155. There is no lasting value in being a discounter in a customers mind, beyond the price IMAGE since there are so many others that have exactly the same image. It's difficult to build consumer loyalty. Customers will buy from you only if you have the best price and will shop somewhere else if you don't meet their price expectations.

  168. Problems: Sales ability.
  169.
  170. Due to their high turnover of sales staff, their ability to sell has suffered greatly. Their training of sales staff has not been very good. Sales have declined by 7% on a per store basis over the last year. But more significantly, their margins have been reduced because of the sales staff' inability to sell high margin accessories. MANAGEMENT has engaged us to remedy the problem.

  211.
  212. Revise your CONFIG.SYS file like so:
  213.
  214. BUFFERS=4
  215. FILES=30
  216. DOS=HIGH,UMB
  217. DEVISE=HIGHMEM.SYS
  218. DEVISE=C:\DOS\EMM386 NOEMS
  219. DEVISEHIGH=C:\DOS\SMARTDRIVE.SYS 1024 512
  220. DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\MOUSE.SYS
  221. DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\RAMDRIVE.SYS
  222.
  223. Since you're using a disk cache (Smartdrive) you can cut BUFFERS down to 4, opening 30 files is apprpriate for Windows. DOS HIGH,UMB loads all but 18K of DOS into high memory. UMB tells DOS to maitain links between conventional memory. DEVICEHIGH loads drivers etc. into high memory.
  224.
  225. If your loading drivers or SHARE.EXE in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you can load these into high memory as well, like this:
  226.
  227. LOADHIGH C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE
  228.
  229. This should leave you with about 630k of base memory and stop Windows from giving you the OUT OF MEMORY notice so often.                                                                                                                At the DOS prompt type MEM/C | MORE (when Windows is not running) to see exactly what's in base and upper memory.                                                                                                                                                                     29
